Introduction

When Supergiant Games released Hades in 2020, it transformed the roguelike genre by marrying fast-paced combat with a rich narrative that rewarded failure. Its sequel, Hades II, released in September 2025, further elevates the formula.

In this entry, players step into the sandals of Melinoe, sister of Zagreus. She must descend into the underworld not to escape but to break in and rescue her family from the clutches of Chronos, the Titan of Time. The result is a game that is more expansive, rewarding, and narratively ambitious than its predecessor.

Story and Characters

The game begins sometime after Zagreus rebellious journey. Chronos has imprisoned Hades and much of the underworld, upending the cosmic order. Melinoe, a daughter of Hades and sister to Zagreus, is guided by the witch Hecate to infiltrate Hell and defeat her grandfather.

Unlike Zagreus escape attempts, Melinoe starts each run by breaking into Tartarus and descending deeper into the underworld. Her interactions with gods and mortals reveal new dynamics: she is more formal and duty-bound than her brother, but still witty and determined.

The narrative structure remains similar to the first game - every death triggers new dialogue and character development. Story arcs progress gradually; after dozens of runs, players piece together Melinoes motivations and the complex relationships between gods and Titans.

Combat and New Mechanics

Hades II retains the top-down action of the original but introduces new weapons and the Omega system. Melinoe wields six base weapons, from twin daggers to a magical staff. Each weapon has an omega variant: holding down the attack button unleashes a more powerful version, often transforming the move entirely.

Arcana cards are another major addition. They act as passive upgrades that persist across runs, allowing players to build long-term strategies. Familiar companions (akin to pets) provide active abilities - one familiar might absorb damage while another heals Melinoe over time.

The synergy between arcana, boons, and weapon aspects results in countless builds. Because boons remain random, no two runs feel the same; however, the persistent upgrades ensure a sense of progression.

World Design and Progression

Each region of the underworld is more expansive than in the first game. The worlds are not only larger but also denser with secrets: fishing spots, hidden tunnels, and optional mini-bosses encourage exploration.

The new camp area serves as a hub where Melinoe can cultivate her garden, upgrade weapons, and interact with allies. The garden mechanic adds a peaceful distraction between runs - players plant seeds found during their adventures and reap rewards like nectars or materials.

The difficulty curve is finely tuned. Early runs introduce basic enemies and allow players to adjust to new mechanics. As you progress, enemy patterns become more complex and bosses incorporate multi-phase fights. But even after 40 runs, new content emerges.

Artistic Direction and Music

Supergiants iconic hand-drawn art returns, with crisp character portraits, detailed environments, and fluid animations. The new setting explores more mystical and apocalyptic themes than the first game, mixing ancient Greek architecture with surreal time-bending imagery.

Music composer Darren Korb delivers another stellar soundtrack; tracks seamlessly blend rock, folk, and orchestral motifs. Voice acting is top-notch; each god has a distinct personality that conveys humour, menace, or warmth. Sound effects for attacks, boons, and environment interactions feel weighty and satisfying.

Strengths

  • • Masterful refinement of the roguelike loop
  • • New mechanics like arcana cards and familiars deepen strategy
  • • Engaging narrative that rewards repeated playthroughs
  • • Beautiful art and music that enhance immersion
  • • Balanced difficulty that challenges without overwhelming

Weaknesses

  • • Content amount might overwhelm newcomers to the genre
  • • Some may miss Zagreus more rebellious charm
  • • Balance tweaks from patches can change boons unexpectedly

Verdict: 10/10

Supergiant Games has done the improbable: surpassed its own masterpiece. Hades II refines every aspect of its predecessor while introducing meaningful new systems. For fans of action games, roguelikes, or Greek mythology, Hades II is essential.
