Introduction

When Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was announced, many wondered if a French studio could deliver an RPG that would stand toe-to-toe with the genres titans. Released in September 2025, it did more than that.

It told a heart-wrenching story about a world where the Paintress, an immortal artist, erases entire ages from existence by painting over them. The protagonist belongs to Expedition 33, a team of rebels seeking to reach the top of the mountain and stop the Paintress before she erases another year.

Story and Characters

The world of Clair Obscur has been ravaged by a mysterious phenomenon: each year, the Paintress selects a random age and erases everyone born in that year. This event, known as the Wipe, creates generational trauma and shapes the lives of survivors.

The player controls Maren, born in Year 33, who narrowly escapes erasure due to a fortunate accident. Joining a motley crew of warriors, scholars, and outcasts, Maren leads Expedition 33 - an unprecedented mission to ascend the mountain and confront the Paintress.

The characters are richly developed. Each companion has a backstory that ties into the Wipe. Through dialogue choices and optional side quests, players build relationships that affect the storys direction and final outcome.

Combat and Mechanics

Combat in Clair Obscur merges turn-based strategy with real-time execution. On your turn you select actions - attacks, spells, defensive stances - then execute timed button presses to deal extra damage or block incoming blows.

Enemies telegraph their moves, allowing players to anticipate and counter them. This active time approach keeps fights engaging and demands attention; mindlessly mashing buttons results in blocked attacks or missed opportunities.

Boss encounters are memorable set-pieces. The difficulty curve is fair but unforgiving - you cannot simply grind to overlevel; mastering timing and understanding each characters role are essential.

Art Direction and Visuals

Clair Obscur owes much of its appeal to its painterly art style. Landscapes look like oil paintings in motion; swirling clouds of pigment accompany every attack.

Character designs incorporate Rococo and Art Nouveau influences, blending flowing fabrics with metallic accents. Cinematic cutscenes use vivid colour to emphasize emotion - crimson for anger, blues for sorrow.

Strengths

  • • Fresh, thought-provoking narrative about art and censorship
  • • Innovative combat blending turn-based with real-time
  • • Gorgeous painterly visuals and unique art direction
  • • Memorable characters with meaningful side stories

Weaknesses

  • • Timing-based mechanics may challenge some players
  • • Some side quests can feel like fetch quests
  • • Occasional performance dips on older hardware

Verdict: 9.3/10

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a triumph of creativity. It dares to tackle complex themes through the lens of a fantastical world while providing an engrossing RPG experience. Essential for anyone seeking an RPG that pushes the boundaries of the genre.
